Meet

Figuration

Our Board of Directors oversees strategy, governance, and audit of the Collaboratory through dialogue with our Instigator and Board of Advisors and other Officers, in quarterly meetings, on annual reports, and through other communications. The Instigator and other staff report to the Board of Directors, but also serve the broader public in trust. As we grow, we’ll also be enlarging our boards and staff as needed.

Personnel

Instigator

David U B Liu (PhD) was trained in several disciplines, periods and traditions in the US, Japan, Italy, and Israel. As a post-academic polyglot thinker, he plies coworking across boundaries and experiences amidst the mega circus of more-than-human life. Skeptical of the ubiquitous imperative of "problem solving," he started this collaboratory to abet thinking and lifeways not centered on human "profit," but humbly nested in sublime webs of life.

Adjutant

Julia Kane recently received her Bachelor's in Environmental Studies from Bard College with a thesis joining material semiotics, story, and historical narratives of some defining materials of modernity (plastic, wood, cement). She is invested in thoughtful human relationships with living and nonliving ecologies and how always to view the "normal" askance. After being a Fellow, she now works for Mangroves to cultivate relational being and thinking.

Board of Directors

Frances Halsband - Co-founder of Kliment Halsband Architects, Frances continues to lead that firm as a Studio of Perkins Eastman, having served as the 2023 Chancellor of the AIA College of Fellows. Frances sees her much-lauded work as giving consensual form to values of care, repair and shared life, and engaging history to inform, inflect the present.

MPI Hamburg

Ralf Michaels - Director of the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law in Hamburg, Ralf also holds a Chair in Global Law at Queen Mary University, London. His research addresses theoretical and practical challenges from the global plurality of laws.

Advisory Board

Bruce Lawrence - Nancy and Jeffrey Marcus Humanities Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Religion at Duke University, Bruce has recently capped his many varied writings with a manifesto, his Islamicate Cosmopolitan Spirit, arguing for a sort of civilization at once postsecular, dynamic and porous. His latest is a verse Englishing of the Qur'an.

Deborah Bew Liu - Founding President of AAI, Deborah runs an all-women comprehensive consultancy in general aviation, ranging over use design and transactions, operational and maintenance integrity, tax and fuel transitions. She is always looking for ways for persons and communities to thrive in mature harmony on the planet.
